Frequently asked Questions

Brightwater Stone

Local Authority run cemeteries will often advise that a memorial should only be installed between six months and one year after burial, allowing sufficient time for the ground to settle naturally.

At Brightwater Stone, we would generally recommend waiting until after one winter has passed following the burial. The colder weather and frost help the ground to harden and settle more effectively, providing a firmer and more stable foundation for the memorial installation.

There are many different types of stone available in a wide range of colours, finishes, and styles, each offering its own unique character and appearance.

We will be happy to advise you on the suitability of each option and help guide you towards the materials and finishes best suited to your personal preferences, memorial design, and cemetery regulations

Local Authority cemeteries generally allow for a broad range of memorial designs, inscriptions, motifs, and personal touches. Churchyards, however, often impose much stricter regulations regarding the style, wording, materials, and decoration permitted.

As a general guide, inscriptions should focus on remembrance and tribute rather than being an overt expression of personal grief. During the design process, we can also discuss any artwork, carvings, photo plaques, or etched designs you may wish to include to create a fitting and personal memorial.

We are often asked how much a memorial will cost. As all of our memorials are bespoke and individually tailored, a final price can only be confirmed once the design, stone choice, and inscription details have been agreed.

The overall cost is usually based on several factors, including the type of stone selected, the size of the memorial, and the amount of lettering or additional ornamentation required. We are always happy to discuss the available options and help create a memorial to suit both your wishes and budget.

Once your design has been confirmed, we will ask for a 50% deposit before manufacture, with the balance to be paid prior to installation. (Prices are inclusive of VAT)

Local Authority run cemeteries and churchyards will usually charge a fee for processing and approving an application to install a memorial.

Once you have approved the memorial design and layout, agreed the quotation, and paid the required deposit, we can submit the application to the appropriate cemetery or church authority on your behalf.

We will handle the application process for you and arrange payment of the relevant permit fee directly to the authority concerned.

Lead times vary depending on design.  All of our granite is imported and therefore we need to allow approximately 16 weeks from a completed design to installation.  However, we do hold some stock in our warehouse which would make the process quicker in some cases.

Brightwater Stone’s memorial installers are all members of the British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons (BRAMM) and comply with their standards as laid out in the rules and regulations.
